Montana requires everyone who serves or sells alcohol to complete responsible alcohol sales and service (RASS) training from a state-approved program within 60 days of hire, according to the Montana Department of Revenue. This TIPS course meets that requirement online, and it covers bars and restaurants, retail stores, and alcohol delivery in one program.

Format and exam

The course is fully online and self-paced, and takes about two hours. Work through three parts covering legal information, alcohol information, and intervention, then pass the exam. You can print your certificate as soon as you pass. Course access runs for 60 days from purchase.

Who needs RASS training in Montana?

Every server and seller of alcoholic beverages in Montana must complete training within 60 days of being hired and repeat it every three years. That includes bartenders and servers, store clerks, and delivery drivers.

What's in the course

The TIPS Montana program has three parts: Legal Information (liability, reasonable efforts, and ID checking), Alcohol Information (effects on the body, BAC, behavioral cues, intervention and documentation, Montana liquor laws, and off-premise establishments), and Intervention and Customer Service (safe-service guidelines, customer service guidelines, and the intervention model). It ends with an exam and a certificate you can download the same day.
